2nd 08

ENGLISH
AN ITALIAN IMMIGRANT

Hello, my name is John Abruzzi, I'm an Italian immigrant and I will tell you my story…

I was born in 1907, in Rome, I was a little guy with brown hairs and brown eyes, I was very intelligent for my age. When I was a child, my dream was to discover all the word but my parents forced me to go to school of course ! And it was worth it because at only 25 years old, I became a famous lawyer but too famous…

In 1934, I was married to Lucia Auditore, little actress, she was a cute blonde woman, she was absolutely stunning, this part of my life was the best. One year later, my daughter was born but two years later there was a bad deal… A strange man went to my lawyer's office, he was tall with dark short hairs, he was wearing a suit, he was a man who worked for the mafia, he wanted me to lie to protect his friend who has killed someone. Obriously, I declined his proposition but two days later when I was back at home, I discovered my wife and my little girl dead… I was destroyed and to protect my life and have a fresh start, I decided to emigrate into the USA.

I come in the USA in a ship, as a steevage passenger, the journey was very difficult. When the ship docked at Ellis Island. A lot of policemen were present and they led us to two doctors for an inspection. They questioned me with a lot of questions life : “what is your name ?”, “can you speak my language ?”. As I could speak English, they let me go to New-York City. Three days later, I was in New-York City, I had no money, no house and no friends to help me, I was alone... My first action was to look for a job in my branch but the Americans didn't want an Italian lawyer who had emigrated.

So my first job was shoemaker in a big factory. I worked hard for two years in this industry and one day my boss wanted to see med. I went to his office, he looked at me, he was a little bold man, finally he said : “you were a famous lawyer in Italy, no ?”. I nodded “So why are you working in a shoe industry ?! Listen to me, I know someone in the lawyers community, he may help you to find a job in this field”. I was happy that day, after two years, finally an opportunity !

…/…
2

When I went to the big lawyer's building, I was frightened, very frightened because that was only chance an my last opportunity. The big boss received me in his office and read my file, he was impressed and he decided to give me the job.
My job was interesting in America, very interesting because all deals were different. Three years later the big boss received me to give me his position, the best lawyer in New-York City, because he was very sick and he was looking for his succession. I saw him at the hospital, he was bald and very thin but he died without pain.

Well, that was my story, I started small a little place and I finish at the top, it's may be “the American Dream”. But my wife and my daughter died for this and I've promised to find the culprits and friny them to the justice.

My wife was next to me and pressed my hands giving me the sensation to be really loved. I had a glimpse around me where all my memories were hanging from the walls. I smiled while I was looking a picture drawn by my seven-year son, Alexander. He was five and to leave him tore me apart because he needed me as I needed him. But I knew that it was the only solution for our future, indeed I hoped to send him to school. The money I would find in the USA would unable to accomplish my goal. If I didn't earn this money, my son would be obliged to work instead of going to school. I remembered the first time when I imagined this solution. At this age, I worked so hard to pay the rent and to bring some food to my family. We had many money problems therefore Luisa, my wife had to sell cakes to meet our expenditure but one day, I was fed up with this situation. It was a Monday morning and I was obliged to go to a friend who lived in Hamburg near the port. The hurried crowd was walking in the hubbub of the fish market, but something else attracted my eyes and I paused in the middle of the street. I saw about one thousand people going on a wide ship. I could read “Ellis Island Experience”, as a consequence I understood that they were going to America. I understood they were poor because their clothes were worn out and dirty. I understood that they wanted to find the happiness in a foreign country and the American Dream tempted them. I understood that I was exactly in the same situation.

My son entered in the kitchen while I was closing my suitcase. He didn't know what was going on so he ran towards me laughing and saying :
“Dad ! Dad ! Look at my paper bird !”
“Hans, you must explain to him that you are leaving us to find a job in America” whispered my wife in my ear.
“Dad, I put it on the shelf next to the clock. It is beautiful, isn't it ?”
“Yes, it is, my little boy. Everything you do is beautiful. But now I have to talk to you as if I'm talking with a grown up. Do you think you can be a “man” for two minutes ?”
“Yes, daddy, I am already a man.” he said showing his muscules.
I grinned again to hide my pain which began to grow up to finally become huge. He was so fragile, so young : how could I leave him ? At this moment, I didn't feel like a brave hero who went abroad to save his family. No, I felt as a villain betraying his own son.
“Take care of your mum because I'll be absent for a long time. But don't forget that I still love you and that I wish I could stay with you. When you'll think about me, know that I'm working for your future. And I promise you that I'll come back.”
“You are leaving us ? Why ?”
“Money, money. All the word is lead by money. You'll understand when you'll be older.”
My wife was crying ; the tears slipped in her grey dress, the only she had. Then, I took her in my arms so she put her head on my chest and my white shirt quickly became wet. Now I wasn't allowed to turn back my head as the temptation to stay would be too strong.

Outdoors, the night mixed itself to the rain which had begun to fall five minutes earlier. Time to cry was over because America was waiting for me. Once I arrived at the port, I saw the crowd which hurried on the deck to have a place on the boat. Fortunately, in despite of the numerous emigrants, I succeeded to go up on the ship ready to start for a long journey which would last many months. On the other hand, I didn't know if I would be strong enough to survive the trip because the crossing conditions were very hard. The majority of the emigrants were steerage passengers so the majority didn't appreciate the uncomfortable cabins we had. Thus, I preferred spend all my time on the deck to take advantage of the splendid landscape. Because of my free time, I kept daydreaming about my family, wondering : “Are they fine ? Are they hungry ? Did he make a paper bird ? What's the colour of his new bird ?” But the worst appeared at night while I was sleeping. Nightmares settled down on my spirit without ever leaving. I often saw my little boy ill on the floor, he couldn't stop moving because he had a stomach-ache : that was a gloomy scene and I prayed to forget it. One night, I screamed louder than before, so, two men came to see me to check my health state. They found me totally afraid on the one hand and totally motionless on the other hand, as if I had seen a ghost. They were almost right.
“Are you ok, man ? Do you want something to drink or to eat ?” suggested the first man dressed in black pyjamas.
“No, thank you, I'm fine, now. It was only this stupid nightmare I have every day.”
“Yes, I understand you perfectly” declared the second man sitting on the chair opposite me. “I suppose you were obliged to leave your family to find a job in America ? You're not the first and surely not the last. I come from Poland and there, I didn't have enough money to pay for a room anywhere : a room ! Fortunately I didn't have to leave children or else I wouldn't have left : I wouldn't be fit. ”
“And you, where do you come from ?” I questioned the man in the black pyjamas.
“Italy. But I came to Hamburg first to join a friend who wanted to try the same adventure as me. I left behind me three little girls. I put them in an orphanage during my travel. Have you got children too ?”
“Alexander, he is fond of creating paper animals.”

We talked all night telling stories about our childhood or about our job. I was a shoemaker in Germany but although shoes are essential in life, many people preferred repairing themselves as they were short of money. I would never forget the first shoe I created. My father was so proud of me that he kissed me on my forehead for the first time. Thanks to my new friends, the journey became less boring, more joyful. We were all like a nice family with many common points. Some weeks later, one evening while we were eating, someone shouted :
“New York ! New York City !”
We all stood up and went to the front of the boat. Opposite us there was the fantastic New York City. I couldn't hear anything because all the people were laughing, crying, singing in the same time. I was relieved to finally see the splendid city that we expected so much : it was here in front of us. The outline of the Statue of Liberty seemed to tell us :”Welcome to America ! You achieved your goal.” We danced all night without understanding what exactly happened in our heads. We celebrated our imminent arrival singing a lot of songs coming from our country of origin, drinking too much and taking advantage of the present moment.

When the ship landed in Ellis Island, we formed long lines to enter in the inspecting hall. Indeed, we had to undergo medical exams, questioning and finally if everything was right, we would begin our new life in the USA. We were numerous so we waited for a long time. Some spent time talking, sleeping, complaining and even knitting. Me, I observed this entire organisation where officials acted as ants in the wood. There was a boss who delivered orders to doctors or interpreters ; something surprised me in his expression : he seemed very concerned about us.
After long hours waiting, a doctor examined me, grabbing my throat, touching my heart, looking beneath my shirt. I was very relieved when he said to me that I had no health problems. After that, he led me towards an interpreter who worked for the registration clerk. The interview began :
“What's your nationality ?”he asked me in English. I understood because I had heard many people before me who had answered : “Español” or “Français”. “Deutsch” I declared.
“So tell me about you : name, occupation, age, family.” he continued in German.
“My name is Hans Bergmann. I lived near Hamburg with my wife and my son, I am a shoe maker.”
As soon as the word “my son” went out of my mouth, I felt strange and a little absent-minded. He recognized the signs of sadness and the interpreter who interviewed me, changed topics.
“Have you ever been to prison ?”
“No.”
“How much money do you have ?”
“Not much.”
They tried to be nice with me but I quickly understood that I was just an emigrant among others.

Those who said that finding a job in the USA was easy, were right. I would never have believed that I would be hired in a factory so rapidly. Factories in America were huger than those I knew in Germany. If I had to describe my first sensation, I'd say that it was a big group of buildings with a lot of smoke covering them all. But inside, I thought it was more impressive than outside. At the back of the room, enormous pulleys stood making noises that would be familiar to me, some months later. In front of the pulleys, workers formed long lines which surrounded long tables on which there was a conveyor belt. Everybody had their place in this assembly line work. Everybody made something important and at the end, the product was finished. I couldn't help thinking that it was fascinating to see people do the same thing all day.
The first day, I didn't know exactly what I had to expect from this job. However I was sure that it would be a little boring but I was ready to overcome all the difficulties if it could help my family. So, while I was working, I imagined myself making a shoe. Making a shoe, it's every day a different work because every shoe is different. I drew in my head the curves of heel adding, after, leather. Thus, my creations lasted longer than the other shoes. I put also some decorations to please women who like to be posh and smart. It was my way to survive in this world which wasn't mine. And it was the solution as well to avoid thinking about them : my family who stayed in Germany.

One week later, I began to talk with workers who were next to me. At the beginning we told each other our story, explained our choices describing our problems and they nodded because they lived the same thing. That's why, we became quickly closer. We supported those who feeling low trying to be funny but sometimes we just sympathized with them as their situation were worse than ours.
“I received this letter this morning” Bennito, my Italian friend, whispered to me one day. He looked extremely frightened as if the devil was between his hands.
“Why don't you open it ? It's surely a letter from Italy ! Maybe if you are lucky, you'll discover photography.” I was trying to reassure him.
“I don't know...I have a gloomy feeling. I expected the next letter in April, we are in March.”
Slowly he ended up opening the letter. He read for one minute and his face turned pale. Immediately, I took him by his shoulders and shook him because he didn't react to the sound of my voice.
“Benito ! Benito ! What happened ? Are you fine ? Tell me, I beg you !”
“Mila...my little Mila...she died ! The tuberculosis took her ! It took her ! It took her !” I could feel the anger in his voice so I let him shout in despite of the numerous heads that turned towards him. The still invaded the room giving to Benito more strength to scream. After a couple of minutes, I brought my friends out. I was convinced that he had become crazy. In front of the factory, he hit the wall with his hands which began to bleed. I tried to stop him but he continued as if I wasn't there. But I was there so I grabbed his fists and I immobilized him saying to him :
“Think about your two other daughters. I'm sure that they don't want to see you hurting yourself. You must live for them even if you have just lost a girl.”
I held the letter in my hands because it fell down when I had took him out. I read a passage that could help him :
“That's not your fault, says your eldest daughter. Don't forget it.”

After this terrible moment where I saw the suffering in his eyes, my family settled in my spirit and never went out. Sitting on my bed, I stared at the picture of my son and the only photograph where we were together : Luisa, Alexander and me. For long time I looked at the smile of my wife who was holding our son with pride. My left arm surrounded her hips while my right arm was caressing my medium blond-haired son. He was wearing his favourite brown pyjamas on which Luisa had knitted a bear his favourite animal. She knitted all our clothes : I remembered that she spent so much time on practising this activity because “when I knit my spirit is empty, otherwise it is full of my problems” she often repeated. I recollect her golden hair falling in front of her eyes that I would slip behind her ears. I missed my family, I missed their laughs, and I missed my house...
Therefore I got up from my bed and managed myself towards my desk. I succeeded to find a paper and a pen. I started my first letter from America

Dear Luisa, 23rd March, America

If you knew how I miss you ! Since I left you, you always occupy my thoughts. I say to everybody that you are the most stunning wife a man can have. I'm fine and I earn so much money that I am sending some to you and to Alexander. I hope he's not upset because of me. Could you repeat something to him for me ?
I'll come back.
Hans

Before the war, a lot of people were present outside : in the town, at the beech, contrary to today. Now, no woman was outside alone. They were too afraid. Just a few men were out : to go to their job ( if they had one), or to go to the supermarket (if they had money). Amine was walking in the streets. He wore a grey dirty suit with a white shirt. It seemed a little big for him. He also wore a black hat. No expression appeared on his face. He was so used to doing the same journey to the garage every morning. At the corner of the street, he turned and, there was the garage. He was a little surprised to see that the big, blue, mechanical door was closed. But when he wanted to open it, it would not open. Amine tried again but in vain. He asked himself why the door was closed. Indeed, it was tuesday, and every day he was there. Suddenly, when he looked up he saw a little piece of paper. He took it and read :
As you know, the war made a lot of damage, but
in particular on the cars. As a consequence, the
firm went bankrupt. I'm sorry...

Amine read it three times. He would not believe it. But he finally put the paper back to its spot. Then,he turned back.
He didn't want to go back home. He was afraid of his wife's reaction. She should be so sad ! Even his soon. Well, after thinking, he decided to spend this day to try to find a new job. However, it was a really difficult task, because it was in 1963, just after the big algerians war.

It was 9:00 p.m and Amine didn't find anything. His jacket was all wet because of the rain. He was so tired and disappointed, that's why he decided to get back home.

A sweet pepper's smell floated in the little flat. A woman was taking care of something in the oven. A child came and he kissed his father. Then, he said : « Hi Dad ! I missed you ! Hello my lovely baby ! How are you ?
I'm fine ! Today, I played basketball, It was great ! Oh ! Really ? That's so cool ! »
Then, the child smiled and went back in his room.
Fatima came in front of her husband and immediately, the Amine's smile disappeared. That's why Fatima asked :
« Are you O.K ?
Uhm..Yes, I...I don't know...,he turned pale.
What happened ?
Well, Uhm...The...garage went bankrupt, so I'm unemployed...
Oh my god ! That's so terrible ! Yes, yes...I know...
How are we going to manage ?
I will find a job,don't worry,...I must find a job, quickly ! »

One Month Later...

A lot of people were present in the harbor.
Amine was not the only one who wanted to go abroad to find a job. Indeed, he didn't find any job in Algeria. He needed money to eat. He decided to go to the U.S.A. This decision was really difficult for him and for his family. He would miss them.
He chose the U.S.A. Because it was easier to find a job there. The U.S.A. was a very vast land. That's why, when he arrived, with his big, brown luggage in his hand, he didn't know which direction he had to take. He walked all day in these American streets. He was tired and hungry. It was sunset.
Amine started to be disappointed, and angry to have come here for nothing.
Suddenly, he saw a huge building. You could see capital letters : SHAUN TAN.
He didn't what it was, so he entered into this building. A light shone and Amine was obliged to close his eyes a few seconds. When he opened them, he saw that a lot of people were present. They were mass-producing something. Maybe cars. A man, with a black suit, he was tall and clean, came just in fron of Amine and asked him what he was doing here. Amine said that he didn't know that it was a factory. But he explained his situation and said that he really needed to find a job for his family. The man reflected an finally, he said :
« Well,O.K, you have to be here tomorrow at 6:00 a.m. Don't be late ! »
Amine was so happy ! He went to his hotel's room and slept his mind at peace.

Two Months Later...

The hotel's room was not very big. A bed was in the middle of the room. Amine was sitting on it. He was holding frame with his family's photo.
He missed them. They were so far... !
But unfortunately, he didn't have any choice. So, he decide to write a letter to them.

Object : news about me. Date : 22/03/1963

Dear family,
How are you ? I'm tired ,but I'm fine.
I wish you are well too.
The U.S.A is a very nice country, but without you, it's not so fantastic. My job is tiring, but that's all I have. With it, we can eat, and that's the most imprtant. I hope my lovely child is fine and that he won his basketball matches. I hope that you, my dear wife, you're not too sad.
I love you ! Amine.A. I miss you !

The making of an immigrant

My name is John and this is my story.
It was on April 1910, I lived in Dublin, Ireland, with my wife Mary and my daughters Jane and Amy. Our family was poor, it was cold and we had not enough money to eat. My children were often ills and we couldn't pay a doctor to examine them. My wife worked on the farm, at home and educated our daughters. Me, I worked for my boss, I collected the coal for trains. It was very tiring. Many people like me were died out of exhaustion, anger, or illness. Besides, coal was not good for lungs. We were considered like slaves. When I came back home, it was late and my daughters said every evening ‘Daddy, Daddy tell us a story please !' They made me smile so much. Every mornings, when I had my breakfast I read the Newspaper. And one day, I had an idea. I put my cup of tea abruptly on the table and said to my wife ‘Why don't we go to live in America ?' It was my dream and rumors circulated that we could become rich and happy. Mary was not convinced, her face looked anxious, a little afraid by this new but she accepted to let me go over there and come back to take them with a lot of money. According to the newspaper, a boat would go to New York City in two days. It let me the time to do my bags and leave Dublin. I would travel in third class, with immigrants like me.
My daughters did not want me to I leave, they were crying loud and I realized that I would really missed my family. The next day a bus waited for me, I said good bye to my wife. During all the trip I was thinking about our future. There were many immigrants in the bus, all were pensive.

When I arrived at the port, I saw the ship which I would travel on. It was called ‘The Mystic' ; it was very smart and enormous.
I thought that perhaps I was doing the biggest mistake of my life...But no. When I arrived on the boat's location, I was very surprised by the long files of immigrants. There must have been two or three hundred of immigrants ! Maybe more ! I was chocked. I thought that maybe it was not a good idea, I could be crashed. But I was determined to fulfill my dream and save my family.
When doors were opened, every passenger hurried forward to have the best spot. I was in the fifties last ones, I was installed against a wall in a corner, it was uncomfortable. The trip was to last 4 days. It was horrible, babies were crying, children were irritated, parents were so tired, me too. There was no hygiene, it stank. There was no food and I was very angry. I could eat an elephant. Some people were ill and it was contagious. By chance, I was not ill, I was healthy.
Suddenly, I heard shouts ; people hurried themselves to the portholes : we glimpsed at the Statue of Liberty. It was so exciting ! We arrived to Ellis Island. In a few hours I would be in New York City. I had to undergo medical examinations, they let me go to the city quickly because I had no illness.
Now, I was in New York, I could see cars, buildings, food on every street, smart people. There were unknown sounds for me, horns, traffic. I already loved this city. I couldn't stop to smiling. I was lost, I walked for many hours to find a job and earn money rapidly. I saw a factory by the sea, maybe the boss had a position for me. Indeed, he had. It was an enormous textile factory. The work looked fascinating. The next day I worked over there, the boss gave me a tiny housing in a high tower alloted to his workers. All the workers were immigrants like me. I was happy.
Weeks passed quickly, I really missed my family. I thought about what they were doing now, without me. Every evening I watched our family photo, I sent letters to Mary, Jane and Amy. Their answers were rare.
One day, I decided to send a letter with enough money to pay for three tickets to take the boat until New York City. A few days later, Mary answered that she would travel by ship with Jane and Amy to join me. She said that the boat was enormous, with money they could travel in the second class, they were so happy. Me too. Their ship was called Titanic, it looked stylish and reassuring.
Normally, the boat should accost here in 5 days. I was so excited, I bought beds and toys for my daughters, my housing was tiny but with some organization it could be livable.
In New York, I had the same habits than in Dublin, I read the newspaper every mornings during my breakfast. Days passed and soon I should see my family.
The day which I was supposed to see Mary and the girls, I read a bad article… It talked about a ship which flowed ; there were few survivors…

I was trembling, shocked. At the end of the article was written an address which corresponded to the city hall. Over there, there was the list of all the passengers. I had some hope to see ‘A woman and her daughters survived to the accident'.
Immediately I went out to the city hall, I was wearing my bathrobe, my slippers, I did not washing or shave but I didn't care.
When I arrived at the city hall, there was many families who they had relatives killed… All looked sad and desesperate. There were rich Americans and immigrants, they were different but had the same pain. Lists were posted on wall ; there were many people in front of so I pushed everyone on my way. I was in front of the lists, in front of this sad reality. I read, in fat writing, names of people who were killed in the accident and saw ‘Mary FEARNLEY, Jane FEARNLEY, and Amy FEARNLEY'. My face was crisped, I couldn't make a sound. I would cry, scream, run away but my body wouldn't obey what my mind ordered it to do. I had lost all my life, I had no more reason to live henceforth.
My heart beat loudly. It was April, 16th 1912 and I was desesperate. I was depressed, my boss dismissed me, I was chased away from my housing. My life did not have sense anymore.
I wrote a letter to explain why I killed myself ; I didn't know who would read this.
I jumped down from my building to join my family in heaven.

It was my story.
End.
